Salem, Massachusetts, known for the infamous Salem Witch Trials, is far more than “just a bunch of Hocus Pocus”, but don’t worry, we’ll be getting into that too. This historic, coastal city is filled with beautiful and interesting sights, unique shops, and my favorite, taste-filled places to indulge your every food and beverage need. Here you’ll find the ultimate guide to exploring “Salem’s Best” in October (or any other month of the year). 

​When entering downtown Salem, one of the first buildings you’ll notice is The Witch House, originally home of Judge Jonathan Corwin, who took part in the Salem Witch Trials in 1692. On this self-guided tour you’ll find research, information, and 17th century artifacts from the time of the trials. This is the only building in Salem with direct ties to the trials that is open to the public. You can purchase tickets here.

If you’re looking to experience a Neapolitan style, fresh-out-of-the-brick-oven pizza, Bambolina is the place to go. Their handcrafted dough, combined with unique flavors and ever-changing toppings create the perfect pie. Although classic, their flagship Margherita pizza is a go-to of mine. Its crushed tomatoes, melted mozzarella, and crisp basil is a flavor combo that will leave anyone wanting more. These made-to-order treats will not disappoint. 

Kokeshi is a dining experience that you don’t want to miss. Owned by the Larry Leibowitz and Tim Haigh, the same owners of the previously mentioned Bambolina, this restaurant specializes in Asian Street Food with a flare. They have an impressive list of cocktails, sake, and local craft beer, along with a food menu that is always rotating and sure to satisfy your cravings. One of my favorite ways to start my Kokeshi experience (when available) is with their Steamed Rice Buns with Shrimp filled with crunchy radishes, carrots and an aioli that is delicious.

As an entrée, my usuals are Thai Green Curry or Ahi Tuna Poke. You can see in the photos the “to-go” poke bowls that were offered during the start of Covid-19, before restaurants were allowed to reopen. I give it 5 stars for the delicious and fresh ingredients, along with a bonus for creativity. Lastly, what's better on a chilly day than a warm bowl of ramen? They have plenty of ramen options, including vegetarian. Do yourself a favor and stop in (and let them know we sent you)!

Overlooking Salem Harbor, Finz Seafood & Grill is surely a treat. Finz is located in the heart of Salem Wharf and has a beautiful view of the Pedrick Store House from its outdoor dining area. Their eclectic food menu and authentic sushi bar makes this is a must-go while visiting Salem, MA.

Friends and I are were in search for the perfect plate of nachos. One with the right chip-to-cheese ratio, toppings on every layer, and easily shareable. We put together a “Salem Nacho Crawl” to rate different restaurants in Salem on their nachos. While some were better than others, we were able to narrow it down, crowning the winner as Sea Level Oyster Bar. Sea Level, sister restaurant to Finz (mentioned above), is known for their raw bar, lobster rolls, and 3-Way Steak Pizza (if you’re from the North Shore, you know this is a staple). Nachos not being the first appetizer to come to mind when dining here, I was pleasantly surprised. They were served on a baking pan, spread in very thin layers so that the cheese and toppings covered almost every chip. On one of the orders, we added their pulled chicken which was tender, flavorful, and a tad spicy. Being this was early on in our tour, we made mental notes and moved to our next locations.

A meal that everyone loves is Brunch. It’s a wonderful creation that is early enough to enjoy delicious egg dishes or waffles while late enough in the day to indulge in an adult beverage, guilt-free. Salem has many tasty brunch spots however; I have narrowed it down to my top two. The first being Ledger Restaurant & Bar, a former 1818 bank transformed into a unique downtown Salem hot spot. Their menus are unique, seasonal, and fantastic and their brunch is no different. Their brunch cocktails are a perfect introduction to a memorable meal. Filled with a combination of breakfast and lunch options, there is something for everyone. Their Eggs Benedict is served on a giant English muffin, doused in hollandaise sauce and is sure to keep you full all day. If you’re not much of a breakfast food person, their classic Ledger Burger is a must-try. Served with a secret house sauce and homemade crispy potatoes, this is the best burger I have experienced in Salem, thus far. 

Lastly, for the sweet-lovers, Ledger offers a “Daily Donut”, which during my last visit was Banana Split style.

My second favorite place for breakfast/brunch in Salem is more traditional, Red’s Sandwich Shop. Red’s is a classic breakfast spot and offers all the staples in addition to daily specials and serves breakfast all day. The hustle and bustle and huge portions gives a diner feel all while you’re sipping a mimosa and enjoying one of their many Eggs Benedict options. When ordering, don’t forget to ask for a “table pancake” for your group to share. Fair warning, it’s bigger than the plate!

​While there are many delicious seafood restaurants in Salem, Turner's Seafood has completely won me over. Their menu is impressive and has a wide variety of options for both seafood and landlubbers. To start, I suggest their award-winning Lobster Bisque. It’s filled with large chunks of lobster and its velvety texture is irresistible. Also, do your table a favor and order the Asian Nachos. This non-traditional nacho plate comes with wonton crisps topped with tuna sashimi, Asian slaw, wasabi aioli, and candied ginger. It’s unlike any other appetizer I’ve had and it’s truly delicious. If you like pasta and a little spice to your dish, the Mussels & Calamari Fra Diavolo is the way to go. It has just enough spice without overpowering the other flavors. Warning: you WILL have leftovers. If you’re in the mood to cook at home, Turner’s also has a fish market inside, with all your fresh fish needs to-go.

Looking for something on the lighter side? Life Alive Organic Café is the place to go. Their food options are colorful, fresh, delicious and perfect for non-meat lovers, vegans, or anyone looking for a healthy alternative. Whether you’re craving smoothies, salads, or a warm grain bowl, Life Alive has a menu that makes choosing just one item extremely difficult. I’ve never been able to stray away from The Adventurer Bowl until recently, when I tried the Rainbow Harvest Bowl. It’s a flavorful mixture of brown rice, fresh vegetables and legumes, topped with whipped sweet potatoes and a tamari ginger sauce. Life Alive also offers catering and meal plans for delivery/pickup.

If you need a break from food and want to get the true Salem experience, head across the street from Life Alive for a psychic reading at Hex: Old World Witchery. This was one of my first Salem activities when visiting the area and was one I’ll never forget. Whether you’re a believer or not, it’s worth exploring.

One of my Salem “rituals” if you will, is grabbing a nice cold, craft beer after a psychic reading and discussing with friends what our readings uncovered. Gulu-Gulu Café is the ultimate craft beer spot. They have numerous rotating beers categorized by type, style, and flavor. As my love for craft beer increased over the years, Gulu-Gulu has always been my chosen place for discovering new brews. This cozy café is located in Salem’s downtown on Essex Street and accompanied by their sister restaurant, Flying Saucer Pizza Company, Blue Fez, and the famous “Bewitched” statue. 

If you’re Italian like me or just simply love a good pasta dish, Antique Table is the place to be. Their cozy ambiance and outdoor terrace makes you forget you’re in a city and gives you the feel of an Italian countryside, while enjoying wine and devouring homemade bread. Their meatball appetizer is perfect to share with the table and is covered with their house red sauce and dollops of ricotta. My favorite dish here is their Eggplant Parmigiana, which is a close second to my mother’s, and that's saying A LOT. While there are many other authentic dishes to choose from, this is the perfect classic Italian meal that makes you feel like home. 

A place I enjoy visiting frequently is The Speakeasy Lab at Deacon Giles Distillery. Home of the Damn Righteous Spirits line, distilled in-house, this is a hidden gem, which is how it got its name, “Speakeasy”. There isn’t a sign or a largely painted logo on the building, simply a red light, letting you know if they’re open or closed. Their Tiki Patio has been a great addition during Covid times and gives a fun, tropical vibe to go with their unique and creative cocktails. Their menu has a large variety which changes seasonally and includes drinks for a cause, tiki style, or a spin on your classic favorites. 

A drink I’ve newly added to my long list of preferred cocktails is their “Speakeasy Mulled Cider”. This special concoction contains warm, farm cider, spiced rum, and a local apple cider donut topped with whipped cream. I realize this is the second mentioning of donuts but, 'tis the season! 

If you want to impress your guests with a cheese and charcuterie board to remember, The Cheese Shop of Salem is the place to go. They have endless cheese options from all over the world, cured meats, and pickled vegetables to tie everything together. Often times, they have fresh bread from A&J King Artisan Bakers, a neighboring bakery that a French friend of mine recently told me has the best bread and pastries she's had since living in France! The Cheese Shop also has a unique variety of wine and craft beer, perfect for a night of entertaining or a picnic in the park. This brings me to my next category, Salem’s Best Picnic Spot.
